When will Black Friday phone deals start?

Black Friday falls onNovember 26this year but phone deals kicked off way earlier than that date. It's been an increasingly prevalent trend over the past few events for retailers to offer promotions up early - even as soon as late October in some cases. Things tend to particularly heat up from Thanksgiving week onward - that's when Verizon launched its Black Friday flash sale in 2020 for example.

As a general rule of thumb, we recommend keeping your eyes peeled from the beginning of November onwards if you're looking for that next upgrade. As always, we'll be updating this page with all the best Black Friday phone deals as they land, so don't hesitate to bookmark and revisit.

Keep in mind that many retailers are experiencing some stock issues this year, especially around key flagship phones. With this in mind, we might see some delays in delivery times from some retailers on leading devices.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy a phone?

Yep, it's a great time to buy a device - both carrier and unlocked types in fact. It's generally around when most people's contracts tend to expire so the big carrier's tend to offer up big trade-in options and new plan tie-ins to entice people to renew their contracts. Unlocked devices, especially at Samsung Android flagships, also tend to be sold for their lowest prices all year round over Black Friday.

What types of Black Friday phone deals should I expect?

Cell phone deals are essentially divided into two categories - those made available via the big carriers (like Verizon and AT&T), and those on unlocked devices.

The biggest Black Friday phone deals (on paper, anyway) are always from the carriers themselves. It's not uncommon to be able to score a free flagship device from these companies if you get one in conjunction with an unlimited plan. The kicker here is the plans themselves are super pricey - often costing upwards of $2,000 over two years, so definitely do the math before you jump in with a 'free' device.

More accessible deals can be found on unlocked devices - which are often sold by big online retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. These are most common on Android devices (Apple is the only retailer for unlocked iPhones) and can range anywhere from $200 to $400 off, depending on the model. If you are prepared to switch and pay for a pricey unlimited plan, however, then the rewards are often significant.

3. Price comparison

Relevant for unlocked deals in particular; it pays to do a bit of price checking before the big day itself. Interested in picking up that new Galaxy S21 unlocked at Amazon? Check in every few days to see the going price before the event. It could in fact go on sale early. Or, it could get a price cut on Black Friday that appears to be a good deal but in fact might not be that great.
